Kau

La vivienda Tehuelche

El centro de la vida familiar era el llamado Kau. Un toldo que respondía adecuadamente a las condiciones climáticas, abrigo y transporte para estos cazadores nómades.

El Kau era una estructura formada por un conjunto de palos delgados, extraídos de los bosques, con el extremo superior en forma de horquilla (U) y que eran enterrados con ligera inclinación hacia la entrada. Sobre esta armazón se colocaba una gran capa confeccionada con 30 o 50 cueros de guanacos cortados en rectángulos y cosidos entre sí, con el pelo hacia afuera. La orientación del Kau era siempre igual, con el frente hacia el este o el noreste.

The center of family life was the so-called Kau. An awning that adequately responded to the climatic conditions, shelter and transportation for these nomadic hunters.

The Kau was a structure formed by a set of thin sticks, extracted from the forests, with the upper end in the form of a fork (U) and that were buried with a slight inclination towards the entrance. On top of this framework was placed a large layer made of 30 or 50 guanaco hides cut into rectangles and sewn together, with the hair facing outward. The orientation of the Kau was always the same, with the front facing east or northeast.
