¿Qué es un fósil?

Los fósiles son los restos de plantas y animales muertos hace mucho tiempo y que no sufrieron el proceso de putrefacción y que al cabo de muchos años pasaron a formar parte de la corteza terrestre.

Un fósil (lat. Fossilis, extraído de la tierra) puede estar formado por los mismos despojos o restos del organismo muerto, por su impresión en el sedimento o por las marcas que dejó en vida.
